Dream Power offers therapeutic riding programs to address the different needs of our students. Our programs are offered for children and adults with mental, emotional, physical challenges, as well as able bodied individuals.
Why Therapeutic Riding?
Individuals with almost any cognitive, physical and/or emotional disability can benefit from therapeutic riding, driving, competition or other purposeful, safe and supervised interaction with equines. Because horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. For individuals with mental or emotional disabilities, the unique relationship formed with the horse can lead to increased confidence, patience and self-esteem. Therapeutic riding gives many of our students the opportunity to set aside their crutches, wheelchairs and disabilities as they settle into the saddle.
Therapy experts have found that individuals with challenges respond to the horses with an enthusiasm that can't be matched in the traditional clinical environment. Our horses accept each individual unconditionally and the strong bond that soon develops becomes a vital part of therapy.

* We have an Abuse & Trauma Therapy Program that combines therapeutic horsemanship with dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) based life skills with Life Coaches that have recovered.
Abuse & Trauma Program-
We have programs for individuals and groups that suffered severely life altering traumatic events such as childhood or adult sexual abuse, service combat or severe neglect.
The groups consist of 3 to 5 clients meeting 2 to 3 times per week for 2 hours. This program is monitored & supervised by a licensed mental health provider that specialize in these areas & provided by a Peer Support Specialist who has recovered from a trauma using our methods & is a PATH certified therapeutic riding instructor trained in dialectical behavior therapy life skills. Each client will have an outside individual therapist that is seen weekly & correlates with the professional at Dream Power. This combines equine therapy with dialectical behavior therapy. This program is exclusive to Dream Power & designed by Gina Little because of the overwhelming need & her experience being a survivor of childhood physical & sexual abuse. Read her story.
The use of the horse with these clients is essential as their social structure mimics that of humans closely. A safe bond is quickly formed with the horse because of it’s unconditional love as it becomes the client’s closest ally in healing. Dialectical behavior therapy teaches 4 skill sets to emotionally disregulated people in an experiential way that heal the emotional & psychological wounds caused by trauma & abuse. It teaches in order: Mindfulness - living in the here & now, creating a new & positive base point of reference for perception. Distress Tolerance- how to effectively deal with highly uncomfortable & almost uncontrollable emotions & thought processes. Emotion Regulation- how to identify & respond to emotions before they get to the point of controlling the client by charting, journalling & verbalizing them. Interpersonal Effectiveness- taking the skills learned from the prior 3 components & using them first with their horse then within the group.
